Things Needed?
– country of origin of your passport or travel document (the nationality country on your visa)
– names (exactly as they are printed on your passport or travel document)
– any other names you use or are known by
– date of birth (exactly as printed on your passport or travel document)
– spouse details
– existing TFN, Australian business number (ABN) or Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN)
– residential and postal addresses (your postal address must be in Australia)
– contact details (phone number and email address).
Steps:
Ensure you have your documents ready
Click here to complete the online application on the ATO Website.
You will be taken through the following screens (or similar):
– Identification Screen (submit your ID documents, and personal details)
– Tax File Number Screen (disclose if you have ever had a tax file number, business or are a Centrelink Customer in Australia)
– Address Screen (provide both home and postal addresses)
– Contact Screen (provide contact phone and email address)
– Summary Screen (declaration that all items are true and correct)
Once you submit your application, you will receive an ATO receipt ID. Make sure to record this number, as it is needed to track your application.
Processing time
After submitting your application:
- Your TFN will be posted to your Australian address
- Processing can take up to 28 days
To avoid delays, do not submit multiple applications. If your TFN has not arrived after 28 days, you should contact the ATO with your receipt ID.
Already have a TFN?
If you have previously been issued a TFN, you can still use the online system to:
- Retrieve your TFN
- Request a copy of your TFN notice
- Confirm your identity details
